Frequently asked questions
Everything you might be wondering about, answered plainly.
How it works
Why should I use My Safe-To-Spend?
So you can transfer remembering all the stuff that's coming up from your brain to ours.
How does the Safe-To-Spend number work?
We subtract any upcoming expenses that aren't covered by income arriving before they're due from your current balance. The result is how much you can spend without putting a single bill at risk.
Is this budgeting software?
No. It's for people that hear the word "budget" and have flashbacks to spreadsheets and guilt. There are no categories here. It's one bucket of money that tells you how much is still available to use however you decide to use it.
Are there graphs? Or charts?
No. This is not a pretty visualization of where your money goes. It is the answer to a very simple question: how much money is currently safe to spend?
Can't I do this myself?
You mean keep a log of all your upcoming income and expenses? Yes. But it's a pain. We're hoping you're willing to pay us to take that job off your shoulders so you can sleep a little easier at night.
Your data and privacy
Does it connect to my bank account?
No. My Safe-To-Spend is a manual tool — you enter your balance, income, and bills yourself. We never see your account numbers, bank credentials, or any information from your financial institution. The only financial data we store are the names and amounts you choose to enter.
Why didn't you make it integrate with my financial institution?
We've used lots of different tools that magically pull data from the internet. For some reason, the financial ones seem to make life more complicated that way, not less. My Safe-To-Spend only knows what you tell it.
Is my financial data secure?
Yes. All data is encrypted at rest and in transit. Each household's data is strictly isolated — no other user can ever see your information. Still, don't put account numbers in. We take every precaution to keep you safe, but bad guys are real, and account info won't make this tool work any better, so be careful.
Do you sell my information?
Nope. We won't even use it for marketing to you, except to remind you that your trial is expiring and send you the reminders you ask for. Probably giving up a lot of money there on our side, but treating people right matters to us.
Are you reading my records, or using them for anything?
Not at all. We've got a thousand things to do all the time. Going in and reading where you spend your money is not one of them. Similarly, we don't use your information for anything. It's your information, not ours.
Does My Safe-To-Spend use AI?
Development work included AI. There is no AI engagement with your data.
Your account
Can my partner or spouse use it too?
Yes. You can invite a household member and you'll both see the same accounts and numbers in real time. Any updates either of you make are reflected immediately.
Can I track multiple accounts?
Yes. You can track up to 5 accounts — checking, savings, HSA, or anything else. Each account has its own Safe-To-Spend number. Your household dashboard shows all accounts at a glance.
Can I label my transactions?
Yes. You can both list a merchant and (optionally) add notes. Merchants and any notes are searchable in your history so you can find everything with a certain label.
What if I miss a transaction?
Your number will be off until you update it, but the app makes it easy to catch up. If you've been away for a while, we'll walk you through a quick review when you return.
What's the worst part of using My Safe-To-Spend?
Set-up. Hands down, that's the worst part. The time it takes to go through your statements and accounts and find all the recurring things you have, and enter them by hand, is a pain. It's why we give you 30 days for free — all that work starts being worth it.
Pricing and billing
What happens after my free trial?
We'll remind you a few times before your trial ends, starting at 7 days out. After 30 days, your account will be paused — your data is preserved and waiting for you for up to 180 days. You can subscribe at any time to pick up exactly where you left off.
Who has my card information?
We use Stripe for payment processing. Once you enter it, they have your card information on file for recurring billing. We get information that helps us match your account to payment records, but not your card information.
